Studios
The twelve-week teaching schedule: what happens in each studio, what to prepare, and what leaves the room.
Twelve studio sessions, one a week except for the mid-semester break. Every one of them is a crit or a clinic, not a lecture — you leave having said or made something about a real door, not having listened to someone talk about one.
First door
The first studio — the door you walk through to get here, looked at properly for the first time
Week 1 · 22 February 2027
Reading affordances
A studio on affordances and signifiers — why some doors explain themselves and most don't
Week 2 · 1 March 2027
Hardware clinic
A hands-on session with real door hardware — hinges, closers, latches and locks, taken apart and put back together
Week 3 · 8 March 2027
Audit crit
A crit session for doors you're unsure how to judge, held on the day the door audit is due
Week 4 · 15 March 2027
Whose door is it
A studio on access — who a door works for by default, and who it was never designed to let through easily
Week 5 · 22 March 2027
Redesign studio I
Studio time to pick a door from your audit and start proposing a fix for it, in the room and out loud before it's written down
Week 6 · 29 March 2027
Redesign studio II
A second redesign studio, after the mid-semester break, on the week the security and signifiers lecture lands
Week 7 · 12 April 2027
Redesign crit
A crit session for redesign proposals, held on the day they're due
Week 8 · 19 April 2027
Making clinic
A hands-on session on turning a redesign proposal into something you can actually build and test
Week 9 · 26 April 2027
Prototype build
Studio time to actually build the prototype, with Callum on hand for hardware questions as they come up
Week 10 · 3 May 2027
Public crit
The prototype and crit assessment, defended live in front of a panel who only know the redesign proposal
Week 11 · 10 May 2027
Closing crit
The last studio — a survey of doors beyond the course's own set, and a working session on the field guide
Week 12 · 17 May 2027
