Week 5 Studio: Whose door is it
A studio on access — who a door works for by default, and who it was never designed to let through easily
22 March 2027
Before the session#
Read the week 5 lecture. Bring your marked-up audit — you’ll be rereading it through a lens the audit itself didn’t ask for.
In the session#
Callum leads a walk-through of campus doors most of the room has walked through a hundred times without noticing what they demand: door weight, approach clearance, threshold height, timing on an automatic opener. The studio re-examines one door each person already audited, this time asking who it was built for by default.
Afterwards#
Nothing submitted. This session sets up the access half of the redesign proposal, due at week 8.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can name three ways a door can pass an eye-level check and still fail an access review
- you have re-examined one door from your audit specifically for who it excludes
- you can describe what "passes a real accessibility review" means for a door, in your own words
