Every piece of graded work in the course, what it is worth, and when it is due.

Assessment

Four assessments carry the whole course, weighted to sum to exactly 100%, and each grows out of the one before it: the audit finds a door worth fixing, the redesign proposes the fix, the prototype builds and defends it, and the field guide turns what all three taught you into a typology someone else can use on a door they’ve never seen.

Door audit

The first piece of graded work — a written survey of ten real doors, judged on whether a stranger could tell what each one does before touching it

Due 15 March 2027 · Weight: 20%

Redesign proposal

Pick one audited door and propose a specific, buildable fix — hardware, signage and access, argued together rather than as three separate ideas

Due 19 April 2027 · Weight: 25%

Prototype and crit

Build the redesign well enough to test it on someone else, then defend it in front of a panel who didn't see the proposal beforehand

Due 10 May 2027 · Weight: 25%

Field guide to doors

The capstone — your own illustrated typology of doors, built from the semester's audit, redesign and prototype, and readable by someone who took none of this course

Due 28 May 2027 · Weight: 30%
