Week 3 Studio: Hardware clinic
A hands-on session with real door hardware — hinges, closers, latches and locks, taken apart and put back together
8 March 2027
Before the session#
Read the week 3 lecture first — the clinic assumes the vocabulary it sets up and spends its time on hardware in hand instead of on slides.
In the session#
Callum brings a working set of hardware salvaged from campus maintenance: hinges of three types, closers set to different speeds and forces, latches, strikes, and the panic bar off a fire door. Everyone gets to adjust a closer and feel what “too fast” and “too much force” mean in the hand, not just on paper. The last half hour is spent finalising the ten doors for the audit and checking, out loud, that the group’s set doesn’t repeat a corridor.
Afterwards#
Nothing submitted. The audit itself is due at week 4.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can name the function of at least six different hardware parts by sight
- you have operated a door closer's adjustment screws and felt the difference
- your ten-door shortlist for the audit is settled
