Lectures
Recorded and scheduled lectures for each week of the course.
- Seeing before shooting
An introduction to visual stories, shot choices, sound, editing and the responsibilities that begin before a camera records.
- Camera and phone control
Practical control of exposure, focus, frame rate, stabilisation and file organisation for short-form shoots.
- Light and colour
Read and shape light's direction, quality and colour temperature to set mood, direct attention and keep a subject readable.
- Recording sound
Build a recording chain that survives gain staging, choose a microphone pattern for the shot, and monitor a take instead of hoping it worked.
- Interview and observation
Choose between asking and watching, run either mode with correct consent and technique, and defend every cutaway and trim you make in the edit.
- Storyboards and production plans
Map a logline onto setup, development and resolution, translate it into a storyboard and shot list, and plan the risk, permission and backup a first shoot needs.
- First assemblies
Build a first cut, use shared critique vocabulary to diagnose the story it actually tells, and choose one focused revision before submitting Assignment 1.
- Continuity and rhythm
Use screen direction, action matching and shot duration to help a viewer move through time and space.
- Captions, music and audience
Make a video accessible and intentional by using captions, sound choices and platform formats responsibly.
- Rough-cut clinic
Run and receive structured peer feedback on a rough cut, and separate a useful revision from a request to make every project look alike.
- Revision and peer review
Test a revised cut with an audience and prepare a production dossier that makes the project's decisions traceable.
- Screening and portfolio
Screen final work, reflect on a semester of revisions and prepare a portfolio package for submission.
