Bring all four tiers — the prose paragraph, the beat sheet, the sized shot list, and the boarded keyframes — and read them in that order, cover to cover, before anyone says anything about the last one alone. A storyboard that only makes sense with its writer narrating over it isn’t finished yet. Questions go first to the beat sheet: is every beat a state a shot could actually show, or is one of them a transition wearing a state’s clothing. The shot list gets checked next — does every entry name a size and a reference — before the boarded panels are judged on how well they hit what the list already promised. A board that reads well but was never checked against its own shot list goes back for another pass, not forward to production.
What gets screened#
Four documents and the shot each one produced, in the order they were written. The scale is how much of the result was decided on paper before anything was generated.
The rungs, in the order they screen:
- prose — the order of events is still the model’s to choose
- beat sheet — every beat is a state a shot could actually show
- beat sheet + shot list — size and angle fixed, and the cuts landing where the list says
- storyboard (+ 3 frames) — boards specific enough to check a torch and a profile against
A document can read well and constrain nothing above it — the beat sheet is a pleasure to read and the shot could still have gone anywhere.
For your worst shot, name the earliest of the four documents that would have caught it.
The rungs above are not a description. The rig recorded them once, and that recording is the scale: replay the four documents this Dailies is measured against.
