BRIEFING / WEEK 06
Follow the Digital Trace
Resolve conflicting records by separating authority, integrity and completeness while preserving a decision timeline.
Read, then try it
This briefing explains the week's idea and shows a worked example. Read the objectives and example, then open the lab for the actual controls, three practice configurations and saved fieldwork record.
The week’s question: Choose a record that supports a stated request. Explain why its label, timestamp or apparent completeness alone is insufficient.
Three files claim to be the last copy. Filenames are not witnesses.
What you will learn
- Separate authority, content comparison and completeness evidence.
- Compare candidate records against explicit criteria rather than labels alone.
- Preserve the decision timeline when an authenticated instruction changes.
The briefing
Three questions need different evidence
Ask what the requester authorises, whether the copy matches a reference and whether it contains the required sections. The signed manifest states the requirement. A matching digest is the supplied comparison of content. A section count checks completeness against the requested scope.
A recent timestamp can indicate a later edit without showing authorisation. A matching identifier does not establish scientific truth, suitable interpretation or ownership. State precisely what each record supports.
Compare before selecting
Compare at least two copies using source, timestamp, section count, comparison result and fit to the mandate. Reject a copy for a named requirement rather than labelling it vaguely “unreliable.” If the requirement is missing or ambiguous, ask for clarification instead of inventing authority.
Treat an authenticated amendment as a new instruction with a source. An unsigned message can prompt investigation but cannot silently replace the governing record. The separate demonstration illustrates this distinction; the assigned evidence still needs its own analysis.
Preserve changing authority
A timeline records which authority governed a decision and what evidence was then available. Append the amendment and revised choice instead of rewriting the earlier row. This separates a reasonable earlier choice from an error under its own conditions.
Include a limit: a complete matching copy under the current instruction does not establish every fact about the archive. Pass that limit to the next role along with the selection.
Worked example · a different scenario
In the separate weather-ledger example, authenticated R1 requires eighteen sections and Q-7. North matches both; its being newest is incidental. A later unsigned request proposes East/Q-9, but the authority register has not authenticated it, so North remains justified. Authenticated R2 later requires eighteen sections and Q-12, and a repair receipt supplies South version S2 with those properties. The demonstrator checks the new authority and repaired copy separately, then selects South S2 while keeping the incomplete original South and both earlier decisions.
Watch this separate example and inspect its finished record.
A plausible mistake
Selecting the newest file because it is ‘latest’ confuses recency with correctness. Treating any mismatch as deliberate tampering adds intent that the records do not supply. Preserve exact observations before suggesting causes.
Supplied rule sheet
Where to find the named materials: These labels identify the supplied material on this page and in the combined campus pack; they are not separate files you need to locate. DI-01 is the three archive records with their timestamps, section counts and digests. DI-02 supplies the original signed reference and its amendment. Record your comparison and source changes in the decision timeline; there is no separate event-log download.
- Archive A: 10:10; 24 sections; digest M-42 matches the signed source manifest.
- Archive B: 10:35; 24 sections; digest M-99 differs because of a later annotation.
- Archive C: 10:05; 23 sections; digest M-17; the copy ended before its final section.
- Practice and check mandate: recover the complete 24-section copy matching signed reference M-42.
- Transfer mandate: an amended signed reference explicitly requires the annotated copy M-99.
- Inspect at least two copies before selecting. Digest identifiers are authored comparison results; no external service is contacted.
Before the lab
Read DI-01 and DI-02 (20 minutes). Write one statement the digest comparison establishes and one it cannot establish.
What happens next
A2 uses this record to justify instructions to another role. Every final approach needs source evidence, but matching a digest does not itself choose the recovery objective.
