Assignment 1: Studio exercise portfolio

A portfolio of four linked studio exercises that develops camera, light, sound and editing skills before the final project.

Due: 9 April 2027 at 5:00 pm (Canberra time) · Weight: 40%

The portfolio

Build a small portfolio from the first six weeks of studio work. It should show a progression from individual technical decisions to an edited visual story.

  1. Framing a change: a three-shot sequence using wide, medium and close shots.
  2. Light study: the same subject recorded in two contrasting lighting conditions, with a 100-word comparison.
  3. Sound portrait: a 30-second sequence led by ambient sound or clear voice.
  4. A small change: a 60–90 second non-fiction video with a recognisable beginning and ending.

The final sequence needs purposeful sound and captions. You may work with one collaborator, but each student submits an individual reflection.

What you submit

Upload a folder containing each exercise as an H.264 MP4, 1080p or lower. Add one PDF containing a contents list, the light-study comparison, a logline and shot list for the final sequence, a 250-word reflection and a media/consent record. Name files with your student number and a1.

Feedback

You will receive rubric feedback in the course site. Use it to choose one craft priority for the final project.

The spec

The brief poses the problem and leaves room for a response. The spec is the fixed part: what a marker checks. Some lines can be checked mechanically; the rest call for judgement.

  • four labelled exercises are included, including a captioned 60–90 second final sequence
  • the final sequence shows a real change rather than simply documenting a place
  • all participants and external media are acknowledged in the production record
