Sessions

The twelve-week teaching schedule: what happens in each session, what to prepare, and what leaves the room.

Each week pairs a lecture with hands-on time against the shared dataset, a map, or a case file. Bring what the "before the session" note asks for — the room moves fast, and the kangaroo representative does not accept late submissions gracefully.

The Incident Review Committee

A fictional collision, five conflicting accounts, and fifty minutes to turn "someone should do something" into a question a dataset could actually answer.

Week 1 · 22 February 2027

Reading the collision data

Getting hands-on with the shared dataset before this week's lecture on macropod behaviour asks you to explain what's in it.

Week 2 · 1 March 2027

Mapping the hotspots

Turning raw collision counts into a defensible hotspot ranking — and watching that ranking change once traffic and road length are accounted for.

Week 3 · 8 March 2027

Modelling impact

A short introductory recap of the physics, then a calculator-only session turning speed, mass and two constant assumptions into numbers you can plot.

Week 4 · 15 March 2027

The Visibility Budget

Calculating distance margins for four invented scenarios, then testing what a written scene description can and can't tell you about detection.

Week 5 · 22 March 2027

The Vendor Demo Tribunal

Cross-examining three fictional wildlife-safety specification cards — classifying their real function, calculating their real performance, and deciding what evidence would actually justify a recommendation.

Week 6 · 29 March 2027

Designing the road

Matching three real road profiles from this unit's dataset to an engineering measure, then defending that choice against a complication.

Week 7 · 5 April 2027

Who pays

Working through three fictional strike scenarios to determine who plausibly pays, and on what basis.

Week 8 · 12 April 2027

After the collision

A desk-based tabletop exercise working through three roadside scenarios — no animal contact, no real roadside activity.

Week 9 · 19 April 2027

Briefing a tourist

Drafting a one-page risk briefing, then watching someone unfamiliar with it read it cold and revising on the spot.

Week 10 · 26 April 2027

Learning from elsewhere

A debate exercise arguing whether specific overseas findings can be imported, adapted, or set aside for lack of local evidence.

Week 11 · 3 May 2027

Presenting the intervention

A proposal defence clinic — talk through your draft with peers and a fictional review panel before the real submission deadline.

Week 12 · 10 May 2027
