hi. you found my page(s).

🚧 UNDER CONSTRUCTION 🚧 ✋🛠

“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. The pre visual internet: Gopher, FTP, Usenet, Archie. Then Netscape with frames, the first Browser Wars. Searching for pages with AltaVista, pop-up windows self-replicating, trying to uninstall RealPlayer. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.” — not Blade Runner

before this there was gopher. text menus, no pictures, no colour, just a list of things somewhere else on a machine you couldn't see. then html turned up and suddenly you could put a photo of your dog next to a paragraph about trebuchets and nobody could stop you.

Creating this meant writing it on the machine at home, then dialling up and pushing it over ftp into a directory structure that made sense to nobody but the isp, hoping the case of a filename matched what the html said it was, and waiting to find out what broke.

the tools changed under me the whole time: '95-96 was HotDog, Sausage Software's WYSIWYG editor, because I didn't know any html yet. then FrontPage took over, still mostly clicking buttons and trusting what it generated. by the time I actually knew enough html to write it by hand, I mostly didn't need the editor any more.

some of what's linked below doesn't quite work any more. some of the pictures never made it back off old media. i've left it broken rather than fixed, because broken is honest about how long ago this was.

here's my interest list:

F.R.U.I.T.Y ('94ish, pre-html2, no font tags yet)
motorbike and 4wd'in ('95, html2)
SCA stuff - trebuchets, cannons, crossbows, fighting ('98 build)
my dog Nala (photos from '95, redone early-2000s style - a real stylesheet, not font tags)

this is a rebuild of a real site i ran from about 1996, on and off, for a few years. the ambient nostalgia here isn't for the past exactly — it's for a future the hardware and the software of the time were reaching for, that i now carry around in one pocket-sized device without thinking about it. YEStalgia, not NOstalgia. and if I'd had agentic access back then instead of FrontPage Express and a lot of patience, the sites would've looked like the '98 build, not the plain one — the gap between those two SCA pages is roughly the gap an agent closes. (and yes, a couple of the beveled borders on this page are a small css cheat — view source if you want to know which bits.)
