Week 12: Doors elsewhere
A last, wider look at doors outside this semester's own set, before you write the categories down for good
17 May 2027
Everything this semester has looked at is a door you could photograph on or near this campus. That was deliberate — a shared object the whole studio could argue about together — but a field guide built only from that set risks describing this campus, not doors. This lecture is a last widening: doors that aren’t hinged (sliding, revolving, curtained), doors that mark a threshold without controlling access at all (a shop’s open door on a warm day, a temple gate), and doors whose whole function is symbolic rather than physical.
The point isn’t to add exotic examples for their own sake. It’s to test your own typology’s categories against something they weren’t built to explain, before you submit a field guide that only makes sense next to the doors you personally photographed.
Outline#
- doors that don’t hinge: sliding, revolving, curtained, gated
- doors whose function is symbolic before it’s physical
- testing your own categories against something outside your semester’s set
- what the field guide asks of you that the earlier three assessments didn’t
