Week 1: Opening lecture
What Doorology is, why a whole studio semester fits inside one object, and what the four assessments actually ask of you
22 February 2027
A door is small enough to hold in your head completely and common enough that you’ve operated a few hundred of them without ever being taught how. That gap — total familiarity, zero formal attention — is the whole course. Twelve weeks, one object, four pieces of graded work that each ask you to look harder than the last: an audit of ten real doors, a redesign of one, a prototype of the fix, and a field guide that turns the semester into something a stranger could use.
The studio format matters more than the topic. You will spend more of this course standing in front of doors than reading about them, and more time in crits than in lectures — this is one of only six lectures all semester, and the rest of the timetable is studio.
