Doorology

Twelve weeks. One object.

You have already used a few hundred doors

Nobody taught you how.

That gap is the course.

“Find ten doors. For each one, say what it wants you to do, what you actually did the first time, and whether those were the same thing.”

— the door audit brief

Four assessments, one object

  • Door audit (20%) — ten real doors, judged
  • Redesign proposal (25%) — fix one, on paper
  • Prototype and crit (25%) — build it, defend it
  • Field guide (30%) — a typology someone else can use

Why doors

Small enough to hold in your head completely.

Common enough that you stopped noticing them years ago.

The shape of the semester

  1. Look properly (weeks 1–4): audit
  2. Fix one thing (weeks 5–8): redesign
  3. Make it real (weeks 9–11): prototype
  4. Generalise (week 12): field guide

What a studio is, that a lecture isn’t

This is one of six lectures all semester.

Everything else is studio: crits, clinics, working time.

You will spend more time in front of doors than in front of slides.
