Week 7 Studio: Utilities Clinic

Build and upgrade the water, sewage and power networks, then resolve a service failure that has already begun cascading through the district.

19 April 2027

Before you come

Bring the unmodified <student ID>-w06 and its off-machine copy. Also bring the issued kerrow-ref-w07-overload checkpoint, the failure chronology with the first entry you would investigate marked, and the evidence pack’s water, sewage and electricity availability figures.

Re-read Week 6’s metrics and the Week 3 paragraph that sent industry to Ombersley Flats as downwind, downstream and cheap. Have the water and sewage views open at 13:00. The session starts from recorded capacity, not a symptom remembered from an unattended run.

What has already happened

In the supplied reference scenario, city water consumption exceeds production and sewage production exceeds treatment capacity. The Farrant Row treatment plant is overloaded, and the pollution overlay shows exposure in the Kerrow below its outfall.

Keep the causal record split. Siting the Pellow cells at Ombersley was a student design decision. The stress-test arrangement is an instructor-supplied condition. Production and treatment falling below demand are observed capacity shortfalls. The panels do not support claims about pipe pressure, per-pipe capacity, a far-end-first outage, backflow or a boil notice. Connectivity and flow direction do not become hydraulic pressure because the story would be more dramatic that way.

In the room

The opening round asks when you would investigate and which live field would trigger you. Nadia Ilkhom writes noticed and available capacity as two columns on the board. It is legitimate to mark “not yet”; it is not legitimate to invent an in-game day you did not observe.

The overload checkpoint then goes on the projector with water and sewage views open. The room distinguishes water availability, sewage-treatment load and receiving-water pollution before entering four groups of four. Each group gets ten minutes with Nadia. One student opens the panels, one reads the chronology, one challenges the causal claim and one records the correction; roles rotate in the comparison. All sixteen students therefore have a named diagnostic task.

What you compare

Use the same overload baseline for two dated, disposable branches. The Wensley Bank water-production increment is allocated at ₡6,800/month and restores water headroom; it does not increase sewage treatment. The Farrant Row treatment increment is ₡5,100/month and restores treatment headroom; it does not add water production.

Record both panels on both checkpoints. Return to the personal save and place neither facility. Choose the order in which they should be funded and justify it on the reverse-salient card. The reference water-first branch’s +₡900/month, happiness 61% and Ombersley land value 11 are reference-scenario values, not outcomes your personal save is required to reproduce.

What you take away

Save <student ID>-w07 from the unmodified personal district; do not overwrite it with a checkpoint. Leave with the three-column readings sheet, the signed reverse-salient card, and four captioned pieces of evidence: both availability views, the river-pollution overlay and the facility-cost comparison. Add the unfunded treatment line in writing. Label every figure as live UI, manual observation, worksheet calculation or reference-scenario value, and upload the session record by 21:00 the same day.

The spec

The session contract: what must be ready, recorded or defended. Each line is written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
