Week 9: Speedrunning and the Death That Isn't
Resets, personal bests, and failure re-cast as diagnostic information instead of a setback
A speedrunner resets constantly and experiences almost none of it as failure. The run wasn’t a story that needed a happy ending — it was a measurement. Understanding why reframes a lot of what “failing” even means once a game is played competitively against a clock rather than against an ending.
Outline#
- resets as data collection, not narrative collapse
- what’s preserved across a reset (route knowledge) versus what a roguelike preserves across a death
- how speedrun-friendly design choices (fast restarts, visible timers) quietly reduce the sting of failure for everyone, not just runners
