Week 9 Run: Speedrunning and the Death That Isn't
Where failure stops being a setback and becomes a data point — resets, personal bests, and grief nobody feels
19 April 2027
A speedrunner who resets forty seconds into an attempt has, by every ordinary measure, just failed. They don’t experience it that way. The run was diagnostic, not a story with a sad ending — and that reframing has quietly influenced how a lot of modern games are designed to be replayed.
Before the session#
Watch a few minutes of a speedrun with resets left in, and notice the runner’s tone at the moment of reset.
In the session#
We connect this back to week 5’s permadeath discussion: what’s kept across a reset (route knowledge) versus what a roguelike keeps across a death, and why one stings and the other doesn’t.
Afterwards#
Checkpoint-design briefs are due at the end of this week.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can explain why a speedrunner's reset is not experienced as a failure
- you can name what information a reset provides that a "successful" run does not
- your checkpoint-design brief is due at the end of this session's week
