Week 8 Run: The Ethics of Assistance
Celeste's Assist Mode, argued properly — accessibility, difficulty, and who gets to decide what counts as "really" beating a game
12 April 2027
Celeste ships a difficulty toggle that widens timing windows and slows the game down, on request, mid-run, with no penalty. Some players consider that exactly what a fair game should offer. Others consider it a betrayal of what the game was for. Both positions are held by people who love the game.
Before the session#
Try the week’s live demo on the lecture page with Assist Mode both on and off, and notice which feels like a different game and which just feels like the same game with the volume turned down.
In the session#
Structured argument, not a vote: everyone defends the position they disagree with more than they defend their own, using the demo as shared evidence.
Afterwards#
This debate is direct preparation for the checkpoint-design assessment, due next week — a checkpoint policy is an assist decision by another name.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can state the strongest version of both sides of the Assist Mode debate
- you have tried the week's live demo with assistance both on and off
- you can name a design reason to include an assist option beyond accessibility alone
