Week 10: Losing Together
Multiplayer tilt, attribution theory, and the second failure state that happens after the first one
Losing a ranked match is one failure. Working out afterward whose fault it was is a second one, and attribution theory predicts it will go badly: people reliably rate their own mistakes as circumstantial and their teammates’ mistakes as characteristic. Multiplayer design either manages that tendency or hands it a scoreboard and gets out of the way.
Outline#
- tilt, defined through attribution rather than just mood
- how post-match UI (scoreboards, replays, MVP systems) shapes who gets blamed
- design choices that measurably reduce blame-seeking after a loss
