Crossing Participation
The grade for each Crossing — doing something real in the hallway one week, then reporting and reflecting on it live the next
Due: 30 October 2026 · Weight: 35%
The due date above is when Crossings run until, not a single deadline —
each Crossing’s participation is settled at that Crossing,
across both of its weeks.
That’s the unit: a Crossing, not a week. You go out into the hallway one week and come back and tell the group about it the next, and the two halves are marked together. Be in the room for both: every Crossing opens with its lecture, and closes the week after, when you account for it to the group. Five Crossings of fieldwork, five chances to actually go do something real — start a conversation, run a stall, ask a favour and maybe not get it — and then stand up and say so, out loud, in front of people who can ask you a hard question about it. Crossing 6 is different: there’s no hallway work left to report, so participation there means showing up and presenting at the Legacy Crossing itself, and being in the room for everyone else’s.
The doing comes first. Reporting it well and reflecting on it honestly are how the doing gets graded, but there’s no report to give if nothing happened out in the hallway.
The brief#
Be there for both halves of every Crossing, having done the thing and having thought about what it cost you to do it.
Attendance alone isn’t the bar, and neither is a polished story. “I meant to talk to someone from the robotics club” doesn’t clear it, because nothing happened — and neither does a report that’s clearly been rehearsed since the thing actually happened. What does: naming who, where, what you asked or offered, what happened, and what you make of it — while it’s still close enough to be honest.
What you submit#
Nothing written ahead of time. The report and reflection are spoken, live, at your Crossing; the mark comes from being there — both weeks — and from what you say when the room asks “what did that actually get you.”
What you do write is for you, not for us: a few lines about the hallway week, put down while it’s still unpolished. Five of those are the written record you walk out with, and what your Legacy account gets built out of.
Couldn’t do the hallway work itself when everyone else did? See Policies — there’s no reporting after the fact, but there is a way to still bring something real to show for it.
The spec
The brief poses the problem and leaves room for a response. The spec is the fixed part: what a marker checks. Some lines can be checked mechanically; the rest call for judgement.
- you're in the room for both weeks of every Crossing — the week it opens, with its lecture, and the week it closes
- the thing you report is something you actually did that Crossing — a conversation, a stall, a favour, a build — not a plan or a summary of intentions — and see Policies if you couldn't do the hallway work itself when everyone else did
- your reflection names what you got for what you spent, in the words you'd use minutes after it happened, not a tidied-up version from later, and it's yours — not drafted or generated by an AI tool
- you can answer at least one follow-up question about it on the spot
How it is marked
| Criterion | Weight |
|---|---|
| Did something real in the hallway that Crossing | 40% |
| Named what it bought you, close to the moment | 30% |
| Gave the group something to push back on | 30% |
