Week 8: Treatment, reuse and service requirements

What each barrier removes, expressed as a number somebody else could check.

Roof water is not clean, and “filtered” is not an answer. This week builds a multi-barrier treatment train in which every barrier carries a log reduction by pathogen class, sourced, with laboratory and field performance kept apart. Running it costs energy, so the train's continuous and intermittent loads are separated and totalled against the daily cap. This is also where reuse acquires its service requirements: which end uses each water quality may serve, and what a builder would have to demonstrate before the household drank any of it. Brisbane leads. Now that Release B is in hand, the water quality you design against is the one the measurement year found at your home rather than a generic assumption — which is usually where a first treatment train stops being adequate.

This week

Lecture, 26 April 2027
Log reductions, not reassuranceWeek 8 — the multi-barrier train, what each barrier is measured to achieve, and the difference between a filter's laboratory figure and its field figure
Tutorial, 29 April 2027
Drawing the treatment trainWeek 8 tutorial — assemble a barrier sequence against your home's actual measured water quality, put a sourced log reduction on each barrier, and cost the running
Assessed, due 29 April 2027
Quiz 3: Preservation scope, roof yield and treatment performance4 % of the course mark. Week 8 — what a tested recipe does and does not license, applying the runoff formula correctly, and reading log reductions
Worked example
BrisbaneThe Patels' home leads this week, because its climate makes this subsystem hard. All five homes are compared on the lecture page.

What you leave with

A barrier sequence with a sourced log reduction on each barrier and its running energy costed.

You have finished the tutorial when all of this is true, and you can tell without asking anyone:

Assignment milestone

Quiz 3 (4 %), on weeks 6–8.

Where this sits

With the measured year in hand you size, cost and compare the options, then argue for the one you recommend — the cheapest arrangement that meets the household's own targets, plus an honest case for any dollar spent beyond it.

Expected effort

About 8 hours this week: 2 h lecture and notes, 2 h tutorial, 1 h preparation and quiz, 3 h assignment 2. The assignment hours go into: Treatment and reuse; service requirements for each end use.

A planning guide from the semester planner, not a requirement and not a measurement of anyone. Tutorial submission sits inside the tutorial hours and the quiz inside preparation; neither is counted twice.
