Week 6: Preservation and assembling the measurement plan
Moving the glut into the trough, then turning six weeks of unknowns into a measurement programme.
A garden produces a glut and then produces very little; a household eats at a constant rate all year. Preservation is the storage term between those two curves, and it creates no calories — it moves them through time and loses some in transit. You size it in kilograms and floor area, and you cost any temperature control it needs, because that load lands in week 12's energy budget. The second half of the week is the one that matters for Assignment 1. Every module so far has left behind a list of things nobody actually knows about this house; you turn that list into a measurement programme — instruments, positions, frequency, accuracy, cost against the allowance — with each reading tied to the decision it will inform. Adelaide leads again, on its summer.
This week
- Lecture, 12 April 2027
- Getting March's surplus to AugustWeek 6 — the storage balance between a harvest curve and a consumption curve, and why one tested recipe is the only safety guidance this course will give
- Tutorial, 15 April 2027
- Sizing preservation, then assembling Assignment 1Week 6 tutorial — size the store that moves the glut into the trough, then turn five weeks of unknowns into the measurement register Assignment 1 is built from
- Worked example
- AdelaideThe Rossis' home leads this week, because its climate makes this subsystem easy. All five homes are compared on the lecture page.
What you leave with
A sized preservation store, and a draft measurement plan in which every instrument answers a named decision.
You have finished the tutorial when all of this is true, and you can tell without asking anyone:
- your surplus is derived from week 2's monthly yield curve against flat consumption
- preservation capacity is stated in kilograms and litres, with a floor area
- any temperature-control load is quantified and flagged for the week 12 energy budget
- sheet 3 carries at least twelve measurement rows with every column filled
- every row on sheet 3 names the decision it informs, and every decision has at least one row
- your programme totals inside the $1,500 investigation allowance, with the headroom stated
Assignment milestone
Tutorial checkpoint 5 of 10 (2 %) due 5 pm Friday. This is the week Assignment 1 is assembled.
Where this sits
You meet the client and work through each candidate system — garden, mushrooms, insects, fish, preservation — far enough to know what it needs and what would have to be measured before anyone spent money on it. Every calculation in these weeks is a scoping estimate on published figures, not a claim about this house.
Expected effort
About 8 hours this week: 2 h lecture and notes, 2 h tutorial, 1 h preparation and quiz, 3 h assignment 1. The assignment hours go into: QA, safety and access; the register costed against the allowance.
A planning guide from the semester planner, not a requirement and not a measurement of anyone. Tutorial submission sits inside the tutorial hours and the quiz inside preparation; neither is counted twice.
