Leica Digital M Cameras

Leica kept the rangefinder mechanism, the manual-focus M-mount lens system, and much of the film M's control layout when it moved the line to digital, betting that the way photographers used the camera mattered more than replicating it feature-for-feature. The result is a digital line that lens collectors from the film era can still mount directly onto — an M3-era 1954 lens still fits an M11 built nearly seventy years later. Leica M cameras embody an all-manual control scheme where users set the aperture on the lens and shutter speed on a top dial, with no automatic mode dials or scene modes.

Progress since the first digital M has followed two threads at once: chasing sensor resolution and dynamic range on one side, while periodically stripping features back out — dropping the rear screen entirely, or removing autofocus assistance — for photographers who wanted the digital sensor without the rest of the modern-camera interface layered on top of it.

Leica digital M cameras by release year
Photo Model Year Notable feature
Leica M8 digital rangefinder camera M8 2006 First digital M; featured a 10.3 megapixel APS-H CCD sensor with a 1.33x crop factor. It notably required an IR-cut lens filter accessory because its sensor's infrared filtering was weak.
Leica M9 digital rangefinder camera M9 2009 First full-frame digital rangefinder, featuring an 18MP Kodak-designed CCD sensor that resolved the M8's infrared issues.
Leica M-E digital rangefinder camera M-E 2012 Simplified, lower-cost variant built on the M9 platform.
Leica M (Typ 240) digital rangefinder camera M (Typ 240) 2012 Switched to a 24MP CMOS sensor and added live view and 1080p video recording, resulting in a slightly thicker and heavier body.
Leica M-D (Typ 262) digital rangefinder camera M-D (Typ 262) 2016 No rear screen at all — a deliberately viewfinder-only body designed to mimic the film-like experience.
Leica M10 digital rangefinder camera M10 2017 Featured a 24MP sensor in a slimmer body that closely matched the classic film-era M camera dimensions.
Leica M11 digital rangefinder camera M11 2022 Features a 60.3-megapixel full-frame BSI CMOS sensor with Triple Resolution technology (allowing output at 60, 36, or 18 MP) and includes 64 GB of internal storage. The black version uses a lighter aluminum top plate, reducing body weight compared to the silver brass version.
Leica M11 Monochrom digital rangefinder camera M11 Monochrom 2023 Uses the M11's 60 MP sensor but omits the Bayer color filter array, yielding higher effective resolution and improved high ISO performance specifically for monochrome imaging.
