Week 2 Session: Follow the Incentive
The Hate Wall meets its first question — not what you hate, but who the system was actually built for
1 March 2027
Before the session#
Bring the entry you added to the Hate Catalogue in week 1, plus a guess: who benefits from this being difficult?
In the session#
For each example, the class works through Follow the Incentive: user goals, designer goals, business goals, institutional goals and technical constraints, teased apart one at a time. A cancellation flow that takes fifteen minutes is terrible for the person cancelling and excellent for whoever is measuring churn — the same fifteen minutes, two completely different verdicts depending on whose interest you ask about.
Afterwards#
Update your Hate Catalogue entry with a stakeholder and a suspected intention — both fields the brief for Assessment 1 asks for. Week 1 taught you what you hate; this session is about learning to ask why it exists.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can name, for your week-1 example, at least one person or organisation the design works well for
- you can state in one sentence why that difficulty might be deliberate rather than accidental
- you have revised your Hate Catalogue entry to include this stakeholder
