Week 4 Session: Recording sound
Capture voice and ambient sound that help a viewer understand where they are and what matters.
15 March 2027
Saved only in this browser. It is not a grade or submission record.
Before the session
Bring headphones if you have them and collect ten seconds of ambient sound from a place you may use in Assignment 1.
In the session
We test distance, room tone, wind and monitoring. Students record a short sound portrait and compare what the image alone cannot tell us.
Afterwards
Revise your production plan to include sound: what will the viewer hear at the beginning, middle and end?
Further practice
- W3C: Making Audio and Video Media Accessible explains how meaningful speech and non-speech sound should be represented through captions and transcripts.
- Blackmagic Design: Fairlight Audio Guide provides an official starting point for recording, editing and mixing sound in DaVinci Resolve.
Reference viewing
Watch a scene once with your eyes closed. What information does sound provide that the image does not?
