Week 7 Session: The Queue
The queue is the one part of the store nobody designed. Everything up to here was routed for you — this is where the routing runs out
5 April 2027
Before the session#
Queue somewhere this week — any queue — and time it.
In the session#
The queue is not a delay. It is the supermarket’s confession: that you were never a customer, only a body waiting to be processed. Stand in it. Time it. Notice what they make you look at while you wait — the last unscripted moment in the building, and it will not last. We compare notes: whose queue had a magazine rack, whose had a card reader begging for round-up, whose had another human being who talked to them.
Afterwards#
The queue ends at a machine, in most stores now. Week eight is that machine.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can time your own queue, start to end, without exaggerating it
- you can name what you were made to look at while you waited
- you can describe one thing another person in the queue did that the store didn't plan for
