Week 9: A Tempo You Didn't Choose
Retail sound design as pacing, zone by zone, and why the silence you thought you shopped in was never silent
19 April 2027
Ambient music sets a walking pace the way a metronome sets a tempo, and it changes by zone: slower near high-margin fresh goods, quicker near the checkout so the queue feels shorter than it is. You comply with the instruction before you register it as one.
Outline#
- tempo as an instruction, not a mood
- how the pace changes across a single store’s zones
- what a store with no ambient sound would have to do instead
