Week 8: The Job the Machine Didn't Keep
Self-checkout as de-skilling in reverse, and the surveillance apparatus hiding inside a convenience
12 April 2027
A machine usually absorbs a worker’s task. Self-checkout exports the task back to the customer instead, keeps the wage, and calls the arrangement convenient. “Unexpected item in the bagging area” is the machine disciplining you for doing its job wrong.
Outline#
- de-skilling run backwards: the task returns to the customer, unpaid
- weight sensors, cameras, the screen that watches you scan
- the one moment the machine still needs a human
