Week 8 Session: Self-Checkout
Self-checkout didn't remove a job. It handed the job to you, unpaid, and called the demotion a convenience
12 April 2027
Before the session#
Use a self-checkout, if one is nearby, and notice every instruction it gives you.
In the session#
“Unexpected item in the bagging area” is not a glitch line, it’s the machine disciplining you in real time for doing its job wrong. Self-checkout is de-skilling running in reverse — normally a machine absorbs a worker’s task, here it exports the task back to the customer and keeps the wage. We read the checkout as a small, constant surveillance apparatus: weight sensors, cameras, a screen that watches you scan.
Afterwards#
The machine that watches you at the checkout was setting your pace long before you reached it. Week nine is where that pace gets set.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can name the exact phrase the machine uses to accuse you of a mistake
- you can say what task you now perform that a cashier used to be paid for
- you can describe the one moment the machine asks a human to intervene, and why
