The Job the Machine Didn’t Keep#
Lecture 8 — SLOP2236
It didn’t remove a job. It handed the job to you, unpaid.#
De-skilling, run backwards#
- a machine usually absorbs a worker’s task
- self-checkout exports the task back to the customer instead, and keeps the wage
- calling the arrangement convenient is the whole trick
“Unexpected item in the bagging area”#
Not a glitch line. The machine disciplining you, in real time, for doing its job wrong.
A small, constant surveillance apparatus#
Weight sensors, cameras, a screen that watches you scan — and one moment, still, where it needs a human to intervene.
Before next week#
- use a self-checkout, if one is nearby
- notice every instruction it gives you, and the exact words it uses
- name the one moment it had to ask a human for help
