Week 11 Workshop: Paired playtest
A structured, silent playtest exercise in pairs, separating what you observed from what you concluded about it.
5 May 2027
Preparation#
Complete the week 11 lecture task before this session.
Activity#
- In pairs, take turns being the player and the observer. The player gets no explanation beyond “here are the controls.” The observer stays silent and takes notes for the full attempt.
- Compare the observer’s three observations against the player’s own account of what they were trying to do — note any observation the player disagrees with, or anything the player noticed that the observer missed.
- Swap roles and repeat with a different preset.
Output#
Both rounds’ observation sets, interpretation sentences, and the player’s one-thing-they-didn’t-understand note from the spec above.
Criteria#
Not marked. Your tutor will check that observations and interpretations stayed separated — a mixed note (“they enjoyed the floaty jump”) is exactly the failure mode this week is rehearsing against, ahead of the mandatory play-test in the final assessment.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- three concrete observations from watching a partner's first attempt at an unexplained preset
- one interpretation sentence, clearly separated from the observations
- a note from the player on one thing they didn't understand until they saw the metrics or tried again
