Week 4 Tutorial: Studio Brief 1 crit

Work combining digitizing and Programming I meets an audience for the first time

15 March 2027

Before the session

Bring Studio Brief 1, running, and the one decision you’re least sure about.

In the session

  1. Demo Studio Brief 1 live rather than as slides, in under two minutes, in studio-pair order. The piece running is the demo — this is the first time your studio pair’s combined work meets an audience, and the two-minute cap exists to force you to show the digitizing technique actually driving (or being driven by) the Programming I idea, rather than describe what it would do if it worked. Presenting in pair order lets Idris see both halves of a pairing’s contribution back to back, which matters given the brief asks each of you to name what you individually contributed.
  2. Name which digitizing technique and which Programming I idea it combines, and the decision you’re least sure about. The useful version of “the decision you’re least sure about” is one specific choice — “I don’t know if the scan’s mesh is clean enough to drive the sketch reliably” — not a general request to be told whether the piece is good. Naming everything you’re unsure of, or nothing, both waste the two minutes the room has for you.
  3. Take feedback aimed at that named decision rather than at polish. With a full studio-pair list to get through in one session, feedback on the specific decision you flagged is the only kind that’s actionable in the time left; general polish notes don’t tell you what to change before your slot in the show, or before the time built into this session’s end.
  4. Use the time built into the end of the session to act on the feedback before the day ends. This crit is formative as much as evaluative — tutors want to see the feedback actually applied, not banked for a “later” that the brief’s two-minute-video deadline doesn’t leave room for. Walking away without touching the piece again is the most common way this step gets skipped.

Afterwards

Attendance and participation count toward the crit component of Studio Brief 1’s mark — see the assessment page for the weighting, rather than restating it here.
