Digital-back-to-physical — 3D printing and laser cutting complete the round trip
3 May 2027
The other half of complex physical media, and the piece that closes the course’s thesis: a digital model or a computed decision returned to physical form through 3D printing or laser cutting. Where week 1 asked “how do you get matter into the machine,” this week asks the reverse question.
Outline#
- 3D printing and laser cutting: what each is good at, and where each fails
- designing for fabrication constraints (tolerances, material behaviour) rather than designing on screen and hoping
- a fabricated part as the physical end of a pipeline that started with tracking, a rule system, or a sensor
- studio week next: two parallel clinic tracks to shore up whichever half of the toolkit you’re less confident in, before the final
