What Round Trip is, why it runs dual-audience, and the first digitizing technique — scanning and photogrammetry
22 February 2027
The course’s throughline: a piece of matter makes a round trip through digital process and back — captured, transformed, and returned to physical form or effect. Three technique pillars (digitizing, programming, physical computing) feed that one idea across the semester rather than sitting as separate units.
Round Trip assumes prior depth in either physical/studio-art practice or programming, not both, and spends the semester cross-training whichever half you don’t already have. Today’s studio pairs are deliberately mixed: an art-proficient student with a programming-proficient one, each mentoring the other’s weaker half for the rest of the semester.
Outline#
- the round-trip thesis, and how the three pillars serve it
- why the course is dual-audience, and what that means for how weeks run
- studio pairing for the semester — one art-strength, one code-strength, paired deliberately
- Digitizing Media I: capturing a physical object as data — structured-light scanning and photogrammetry from a photo set
- what to bring to next week
