Tutorial participation

Turning up and doing the hands-on work across the semester's twelve tutorial sessions

Due: 17 May 2027 · Weight: 10%

The brief

Show up, and do the work in front of you that week.

Every tutorial session (see Tutorials) has a hands-on component and something you leave with — a scanned model, a mapped projection, a working sensor loop, an extended rule system, a fabricated part. This mark tracks whether that happened for you, week to week, across the whole semester, rather than asking you to submit anything separately.

Coming to tutorial time is also where you get your first real look at each technique, well before it’s due anywhere: a rough, guided first attempt at scanning, wiring a sensor, or extending a rule system, with a tutor next to you when it goes wrong. That’s the starting point Studio Briefs 1 and 2 and the final project then ask you to build on — turning up isn’t just what’s marked here, it’s what makes the graded work further down the semester possible.

What’s checked

Nothing is submitted for this one. A tutor notes engagement during tutorial time itself — whether you’re there, working on that week’s activity, and able to show what you made when asked. It runs alongside the two studio briefs and the final project rather than duplicating them: those are marked on the work; this is marked on whether the studio time behind that work actually happened.

The spec

The brief poses the problem and leaves room for a response. The spec is the fixed part: what a marker checks. Some lines can be checked mechanically; the rest call for judgement.

How it is marked

Judged across all twelve weeks, not as a single artifact — whether you're in the room for tutorial time and doing the hands-on work that week's runsheet describes — the scanned model, the wired loop, the extended rule system, the fabricated part — well enough that a tutor could see it if asked. It isn't a mark on how polished any one week's result is, and it isn't retroactive — a strong final project doesn't buy back tutorial weeks you weren't there for.
