Week 12: Capstone: the best-of-three
The final series, how to read a patch note, and the five resources one last time
24 May 2027
This week’s decision#
The last week is the assignment: five of you, a drafted series against another team, and an account afterwards of what decided it.
No hero is named this week either, and for the opposite reason to week 1. Then it did not matter who you picked. Now this week’s heroes are the five your team drafted, and defending that choice is part of what you hand in.
Mechanics#
How Assignment 4 runs. Five-person teams, a tutor as coach, Captains Mode, best-of-three, and a review afterwards. The details live on the Assignment 4 page and the policies page; this page only points at them.
How to write a review. Not a narrative of the game. Three to five decision points: what you knew, what you chose, and what you would choose now. That form recovers the whole course, because every week was one decision.
How to read a patch note. Versions move and this course is pinned to 7.41f. What you are learning is not the numbers but how to tell which changes move a decision and which only move a figure. Most move a figure.
Review as a habit. It is the only thing on this page that keeps working after the course ends.
The resource lens#
The five-resource table from week 1, returned to — with every cell now filled by your own examples from twelve weeks rather than by ours.
Before the lecture#
Valve’s in-game tutorial, section 4 introduction — “the possibilities are endless”.
After this week you can…#
- play a full game and afterwards name three decisions you had reasons for, and one you did not
- read a patch note and say which of your decisions it changes, rather than which numbers it moves
- decide for yourself what to practise next, without being told
