Patel household, Brisbane: specialist findings
Release B for the Brisbane home: what a twelve-month measurement year found, the specialists' implications, and the data as CSV. Synthetic case data, handed over in week 7.
Synthetic case data. This is a generated measurement year, produced by the course's model to be consistent with the Brisbane home. It is not a measurement and no instrument recorded it. It stands in for the year the story says passed between week 7 and Assignment 2, and it is identical for every student who took this home, whatever their Assignment 1said.
Memo
- Dr Mara Quinlan — water systems and hydraulics
- Tomasz Ferreira — soils and horticulture
- Aisha Rahman — monitoring, data quality and records
The specialists report conditions and what follows from them. They do not choose the system. That is your recommendation to make inAssignment 2.

Hydraulics
Tank outlet at RL 100.05 m; highest fixture is the first-floor toilet cistern at RL 103.65 m, giving a static lift of 3.6 m. Currently served: garden tap (gravity).
The ground-floor and first-floor WCs both have external-wall cisterns; the first-floor cistern is about 3.6 m above the tank outlet.
| Fixture | Flow (L/min) |
|---|---|
| shower (first floor) | 8.2 |
| basin | 4.6 |
| kitchen tap | 6.5 |
| toilet cistern refill (ground) | 6.8 |
| toilet cistern refill (first floor) | 6.8 |
| washing machine fill | 9.6 |
What it costs the household now
- Electricity at $0.33 per kWh.
- Reticulated water at $3.40 per kL, plus a supply charge of $690 a year.
- Tank inlet screen cleared three times after storms.
- Worm farm fed and harvested; about 15 minutes a week.
What the specialists conclude
- The rear roof plane alone kept the 3 kL tank above half full for most of the year; the tank rarely ran dry because it serves only a garden tap.
- Both WC cisterns are on external walls. A rainwater line to them does not require opening walls, but the first-floor cistern sets the pump's static lift.
- The rear garden gets direct sun only until about 11 am; the front bed and the shared allocation are the productive ground.
- The body corporate secretary has indicated in writing that a slimline tank under 1.8 m on the lot would be considered, and that connecting the front roof plane would need a formal application.
What they could not settle
- Whether the body corporate would approve a pump enclosure on the side path.
- Whether the shared-garden allocation will be renewed at the next annual general meeting.
Gaps in the record
- 2027-04, indoor_kl: Sub-meters were installed on 18 April; April's end-use split is scaled from May
A gap is marked as a gap. Interpolated values are flagged in thequality_flag column of the monthly CSV, and anything you conclude from those months should carry the same flag.
