Week 3 Session: Make Me Click It
Behavioural mechanics enter the Hate Catalogue, and Assessment 1 is due at the end of this week
8 March 2027
Before the session#
Bring your Hate Catalogue in the state you intend to submit it, plus the neutral interface handed out in the previous session for today’s exercise.
In the session#
The exercise is Make Me Click It: you’re given a neutral interface and asked to raise the probability that another student clicks one specific button. No new functionality — only default selection, visual emphasis, framing, ordering, urgency. Then the group rewrites their Hate Catalogue claims in the same vocabulary: “the website made me choose the expensive option” becomes “the website used a pre-selected default and visual emphasis to raise the odds of the expensive option,” which is a claim you can actually test later in the semester.
Afterwards#
This is where experience, stakeholder and psychology meet. Assessment 1, the Hate Catalogue, is due today — the next block asks what happens when you combine everything above on purpose.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can name at least one behavioural mechanism (default, loss aversion, scarcity, social proof, commitment, cognitive load, choice overload) operating in one of your catalogue entries
- you have translated one entry from a plain complaint into a claim about a specific mechanism
- your Hate Catalogue is submitted as Assessment 1 by the due date
