Listening Labs

The twelve-week teaching schedule: what happens in each listening lab, what to prepare, and what leaves the room.

Every lab turns the week's question into a testable artefact. Bring the named data or draft, work through the mapping decision, and leave with the output described on the lab page.

  1. LAB 01One curve, two readingsCompare pitch and rhythm mappings while the source values remain fixed.LEAVE WITHan annotated comparison of two mappings
  2. LAB 02Draw the provenance chainTrace a small light curve from detector images to a playable sequence.LEAVE WITHa provenance diagram with transformations labelled
  3. LAB 03Mapping shoot-outTest linear, logarithmic and quantised mappings against a recognition task.LEAVE WITHa tested mapping matrix and selected rule
  4. LAB 04Fold a pulsarAlign repeated pulses and compare raw timing with a folded profile.LEAVE WITHa pulsar profile and an audification note
  5. LAB 05Noise or event?Annotate a dynamic spectrum before choosing what the sonification will retain.LEAVE WITHan uncertainty-aware dynamic-spectrum sketch
  6. LAB 06Chirp under inspectionCompare raw, filtered and shifted renderings of a gravitational-wave event.LEAVE WITHa blind comparison of three chirp transformations
  7. LAB 07Scan an X-ray fieldPrototype a spatial scan of an astronomical image with progress cues.LEAVE WITHa storyboard for an image sonification
  8. LAB 08Find the shifted lineDesign reference cues that make two emission spectra comparable by ear.LEAVE WITHa paired-spectrum listening test
  9. LAB 09Make uncertainty audibleCompare error voices, roughness and explicit gaps on one light curve.LEAVE WITHan uncertainty prototype with a recognition result
  10. LAB 10Design without soundEnsure the scientific task remains possible through text, table and visual channels.LEAVE WITHa multimodal access audit and revision
  11. LAB 11The honesty auditIdentify where an instrument's musical framing may overstate its evidence.LEAVE WITHa completed disclosure checklist and revised prototype
  12. LAB 12Open the listening roomRun the final instrument with public listeners and capture evidence for one revision.LEAVE WITHa public instrument and observed listening record
