Week 12: The cosmic listening room

Present a public instrument, invite structured listening and defend every transformation.

Week 12 · Public instrument

25 October 2027

Can a public listener understand both the astronomical pattern and how its sound was made?

The question

The final lecture becomes a listening room. Each instrument offers a short guided encounter, source data, a non-audio representation and a complete mapping disclosure. Visitors respond to one scientific question rather than rating musical taste.

Signal chain

Public dataset → documented cleaning → inspectable mapping → accessible interface → listening task → evidence from visitors → revision note. The instrument succeeds when its claim and its limitations stand without the designer beside it.

We close by asking what sonification adds to scientific inquiry and where a graph, table or spoken description remains the more honest tool.

Use this page before the slides, then return to the checkpoint after the lab.

  1. Frame one precise astronomical question for a first-time visitor.
  2. Publish source, mapping, uncertainty and alternatives beside the interaction.
  3. Use observed visitor behaviour to justify one final revision.
successful task completion
Five first-time visitors attempt the same pattern-location task. Values are a teaching model, not an astronomical observation.

A visitor test with a decision

Five first-time visitors attempt the same pattern-location task.

  1. Let visitors begin without a verbal explanation from the designer.
  2. Record task result, control failure and interpretation separately.
  3. Group failures by interface, mapping or misunderstood scientific claim.
  4. Revise the largest repeated failure and rerun the same task.

What the method supportsPreference comments may guide polish, but repeated task failures identify the consequential revision. The final note connects that change to observed evidence.

Three visitors like the sound, but two of five answer the scientific question correctly. What should the release note prioritise?Reveal the reasoning

The failed scientific task and the revision made in response.

The instrument exists to support an investigation, not only a musical experience. Enjoyment is useful audience evidence, but it cannot substitute for whether the stated pattern became understandable.
