SLOP3255 · Week 12 · Public instrument
The cosmic listening room#
The final instrument meets an audience who did not watch it being built. Can the evidence still travel?
The semester becomes one method#
Week 12 is not a new technique. It is the public test of all four stages together.
Anatomy of a listening station#
Invitation
one question and a clear starting action
Instrument
playback, mapping and inspectable data
Evidence
source, operations, uncertainty and alternatives
The visitor should not need the presenter beside them to use or question the work.
First thirty seconds#
| Visitor needs | Interface response |
|---|---|
| What is this? | one-sentence evidence claim |
| What can I do? | one dominant play / explore action |
| What am I hearing? | visible mapping and live status |
| Can I stop? | persistent, immediate transport |
Do not begin with a wall of instructions. Reveal depth as the visitor asks for it.
Observe, do not pitch#
Pitching
“Did you like it?”
Rewards politeness and aesthetic reaction.Observing
“Show me where the main event occurred.”
Reveals whether the instrument supports its task.Watch hesitation, replay, accidental assumptions and recovery—not only verbal feedback.
A public test protocol#
The visitor is not being graded. The instrument is.
Readiness across four routes#
Audio
safe level, immediate stop, meaningful cues
Visual
stable layout, labels, contrast, live state
Text + data
claim, values, provenance, uncertainty
Then test keyboard-only, mobile width and reduced motion. Public means more than “deployed.”
The opening-night checklist#
| Evidence | Experience | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| source is named | first action is clear | stop always works |
| mapping is reconstructable | status is visible | errors explain next step |
| uncertainty survives | no autoplay | alternative route exists |
| claim is bounded | mobile fits | data remain inspectable |
An opening is a testable condition, not a mood.
The final claim card#
This instrument maps [measured quantity] from [source] to [sound dimensions] so a listener can [task]. It changes [operations], preserves [evidence], and cannot establish [limit].
If that sentence is vague, the public experience will be vague too.
Listening Lab 12 · Output: public station
Open the room#
Run
Three five-minute visitor tests with one consistent task and no live coaching.
Leave with
- observation log
- one evidenced revision
- public claim card
