Week 12: Spam Law and Consent
Legal compliance, and the semester's closing synthesis.
10 May 2027
Every failure named so far costs a reply. This closing lecture covers one that can cost a fine or a lawsuit, and ties the eleven before it into the synthesis the final assessment asks for.
Before the lecture
This is just to get a quick understanding before the lecture. The examples and the rest are in the lecture, so it’s advisable you attend.
In brief#
This week’s failure is legal noncompliance: sending unsolicited commercial email without the required disclosures, emailing addresses you never had permission to hold, or ignoring an unsubscribe request. It sits in a different category from every earlier week, “this got ignored” versus “this was illegal to send,” and it closes the semester because it tends to trigger at the exact point good craft turns into volume. The synthesis for the final assessment follows from that: legal compliance and craft fail independently, so passing one says nothing about the other.
