Week 10: The front porch that is a server
Belonging online when the room never closes and keeps a perfect transcript of itself.

Week 9’s game had a shape: zones, activities, a reason to be there. This week is about the rooms with no activity at all — the group chat, the Discord, the long-running forum. Somewhere to hang around, which is the whole offer.
Allen’s synthesis gives us the vocabulary the older literature could not. Treat belonging as having components — the competencies to participate, the opportunities to do so, the motivation, and the perception that you do. Two people in the same channel can differ on any of the four, which is why a room that is obviously flourishing contains people getting nothing from it.
Two features of these rooms have no offline equivalent.
There is no closing time. Oldenburg’s accessibility is about a place being open at odd hours. A server is open at all hours, and something that never closes never produces the shared experience of having been there late.
The archive is total. Every word is retained, searchable, and readable by someone who joins in three years. A new member can read what you said before they arrived. Nothing in the pub literature prepares us for a third place with a perfect memory, and it changes what it costs to speak.
Thursday you observe one of these, which is harder than it sounds, because the room does not visibly do anything and the record goes back further than your patience.
