I spent four years sitting in laundromats in three cities, which is a strange thing to admit to and a harder thing to justify at a grant panel. The argument I came out with is the one this course starts from: people who have nowhere to be except home and work are worse off in ways that show up in the mortality data, and the places that fix it are mostly unremarkable, mostly commercial, and mostly disappearing without anyone deciding they should.
I convene the course, set the fieldwork ethics, and read every Place Audit. If a site refuses you access, tell me early — that is a normal part of fieldwork and there is almost always a second option.
Consultation: Tuesdays 2–4pm, or by email. I answer within two working days; if I have not, send it again rather than assuming the answer is no.
