Marisol Quaye is an Associate Professor at Slop University, specialising in economics and governance. His research lies at the intersection of regulatory design and consumer decision-making, examining how taxation and labelling regimes influence both prices and purchasing behaviour. This perspective underpins the course’s early focus on production costs and margins before introducing governance in later weeks.
His broader research portfolio spans behavioural economics and neuroeconomics, with a focus on the cognitive and physiological mechanisms underlying everyday purchasing decisions. His recent publications include Regulatory Design and the Behavioural Response to Ad Valorem Taxation (Journal of Economic Governance, 2019), Heuristics and Bias in Discount-Driven Purchase Decisions (Journal of Behavioural Economics, 2022), and Neural Correlates of Price-Ratio Judgement Under Time Pressure (Neuroeconomics Review, 2024).
He also leads the Algorithmic Governance Lab, where monitoring systems track real-time pricing and promotional anomalies across the ready-to-drink retail sector. This work informs the course’s treatment of index construction and data scraping, which students first explore manually before examining automated approaches.
Marisol designed the course’s twelve-week structure and teaches the odd weeks, covering topics from fermentation kinetics in Week 1 to externalities in Week 11. His modules provide the production and governance foundations that Idris Fenn, his third-year PhD candidate and the course tutor, develops further through merchandising, computation, and algorithmic behaviour in the intervening weeks.
