Idris Fenn is a third-year PhD candidate at Slop University, under the supervision of Marisol Quaye. His doctoral research sits at the intersection of microeconomics and macroeconomics, examining how Australian consumers respond to prices, taxation, and point-of-sale merchandising in retail markets. His work informs the course’s treatment of merchandising and consumer behaviour, particularly the Week 8 analysis of endcap placement and perceived value.

His methodological toolkit includes applied econometrics, including difference-in-differences and regression-discontinuity designs using retail scanner data, as well as survey research and physiological data collection.

Before beginning his PhD, Idris spent six years as a logistics consultant, optimising supply chain distribution networks. This work unexpectedly informed his research on product packaging margins and remains the basis of the Week 3 case study.

His recent working papers include Tracking Consumer Behaviour in Liquor Retail (Journal of Retail Behavioural Science, 2022) and Product Promotional Framing: Evidence from Australian Liquor Retailers (Australasian Journal of Consumer Research, 2024).

Idris teaches the even weeks, from the standard-drink metric in Week 2 through to the capstone in Week 12. He also leads the practical review labs, including the first review session, which checks students’ baseline index calculations before they become central to later assessments.
