Week 10 Studio: From stroke to system
Scaling one instrument into a small series — output that varies without you touching the code between runs
26 April 2027
Before the studio#
Bring an instrument that makes one kind of mark, well. Today it has to make a small family of them.
In the studio#
Everything built across the last six weeks — the constraint, the decay, the seed — becomes a set of parameters rather than a single fixed configuration. Run the instrument three times with different settings and look at the results together: what stays recognisably the same across all three is your instrument’s actual identity, and it’s usually narrower than you’d guessed before seeing them side by side. That constant is what the exhibition piece in week 12 has to make legible to someone who only ever sees one run of it.
Afterwards#
Name, in one sentence, the thing that doesn’t change across your outputs. That sentence is the closest thing this course gets to a thesis statement for your work.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- your instrument can produce more than one distinct output without you editing the code in between
- you can show two such outputs side by side and name what stayed constant across them
