The Shape of the Distance

Gaps are not sizes, they are shapes. The three tiers, and why the specific version of a gap earns more respect than the vague one.

This week's tutorial →

Two recorded answers to the same interview question play back to back. Both candidates have the identical gap. One says “I’m still learning that area”; the other says “I’ve never deployed anything that other people depended on staying up”. Anselm Pike stops the recording and asks the theatre which candidate they would rather hire, and the room is unanimous within about two seconds.

Gaps have shape, not size

A gap described by size is useless to everybody. Nobody can plan against “a bit behind”, and no panel can assess it, so they assume the worst version and move on. A gap described by shape tells a reader exactly which fortnight of work would close it, which is information, and information reads as competence even when its content is an admission.

The three tiers

  • Closeable by week 12. You can name the artefact that would close it and roughly how long it takes. This tier is a to-do list wearing a disguise.
  • Closeable inside a year. Genuine, unavailable before you apply, and the material your ninety-day ramp plan is built from in week 11.
  • Not closeable, and therefore said out loud. Experience you have not had and cannot manufacture. Said early and plainly it costs one sentence. Found by a panel after you have implied otherwise, it costs the interview.

The counter-intuitive part

Candidates believe specificity about a gap makes it larger. It does the opposite: the vague version invites the reader to imagine the gap, and imagined gaps are always bigger and always adjacent to dishonesty. Precision is how you put a floor under the thing.

There is a limit, and the lecture names it. Volunteering every gap you have is not honesty, it is a different performance — of humility — and it wastes the attention you needed for the two that mattered. Disclose what is load-bearing for the role. Tier the rest for yourself.

Afterwards

Blind review puts you inside somebody else’s gapshape before you write your own, because it is far easier to be precise about a stranger. Your Gap Map is Dossier §4 and carries the largest single weighting in Assessment 1.
