Week 8 Shift: The queue
Rostered enforcement on the course sandbox — you remove things, you write the reason, and somebody appeals it to a person who is not you
26 April 2027
Your first shift on a real queue, with real consequences for people in the room with you.
Before the Shift#
Re-read the ruleset you wrote. You will be enforcing it against classmates who helped write it and will remember which parts you pushed for.
In the Shift#
You are rostered in pairs, forty minutes on the queue and forty on appeals, and you do not hear appeals against your own decisions. ShiftBot has already removed what it removed; your first job is deciding which of those it got wrong.
Write every removal reason in full. Rule, quoted evidence, consequence, whether they can come back. Ren marks these the way moderator applications get marked, which is unsentimentally.
Then you sit on the other side and read appeals against your classmates’ decisions, and you will discover that a removal which felt obvious to write is often impossible to defend to a third party.
Afterwards#
The queue does not stop when the Shift does. Enforcement continues, rostered, until week 12 — which is the point of week 9.
The spec
What you bring to the Shift. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- every decision you made is in the log with the rule it applied
- every removal carries a written reason naming the rule, the evidence and whether the door is open
- you handled at least one appeal against a decision you did not make
- no decision of yours was reversed on appeal for being unexplainable
