Shift participation

The rostered work itself — queue shifts, appeals, and turning up for a community that depends on you having turned up

Due: 28 May 2027 · Weight: 15%

The brief

Turn up for your shifts.

From week 8 the course sandbox is a live community with a queue, and the queue is staffed by you. This component marks the work itself.

It is worth 15%, which undervalues it, and the undervaluing is the point the course has been making since week 1. The labour that keeps a community running is the labour that is least legible to anyone assessing it. We have put a number on it anyway, because the alternative — leaving it unmarked and calling it “engagement” — is exactly what every platform does.

What is marked

The log. Shifts covered against the rota you designed in week 9, decisions recorded with written reasons, appeals heard on decisions that were not yours, and the times you covered for somebody who could not make it.

Nobody is marked down for a shift they swapped in advance. The rota has a named cover for every slot precisely so that a person’s bad week is the system’s problem rather than theirs, and using it as designed is evidence for you rather than against.

Consistent no-shows are a different matter, and they are handled under the School’s Continuity of Service policy rather than here.

How it is marked

Marked on the record of the work: shifts covered, decisions logged with reasons, appeals heard on other people's decisions, and cover provided when somebody else could not make it. The question is whether the sandbox was maintained, and whether you were part of why.
