- Metaphor
- Refugee crises — displacement and reallocation after a shock
- Phenomenon
- Shifts in mycorrhizal community composition and resource reallocation after fire, drought or logging disturbance
Outline#
- fire, drought and logging remove hosts and change soil chemistry, and the surviving fungal community shifts in composition, not only in size
- some ectomycorrhizal taxa are fire-adapted early colonisers of regenerating seedlings; others disappear with their host and do not return quickly
- surviving networks reallocate: carbon and nutrients concentrate toward whichever hosts remain connected — a redistribution along existing links, not a rescue directed at whoever needs it most
- limit of the metaphor: “crisis” and “displacement” describe the pattern accurately; they do not license the claim that the network is tracking need, any more than week 3’s “aid” did
